Requirements

Although the following represent our Company Employment Standards, individual assignments have exceptions as to level of experience, severity of violations and others. Please contact a Vanguard area office for details on any exceptions.

Driver Employment Standards

  • We employ both Class A and Class B CDL drivers.
  • Our drivers must have at least two (2) years driving experience in a commercial vehicle.
  • Class A must have two (2) years in a tractor/trailer.
  • Drivers must be a minimum of twenty-three (23) years of age.

Driving Record

  • No more than two (2) moving violations in a twelve (12) month period.
  • No more than three (3) moving violations in the past three (3) years.
  • No serious traffic violations as described in the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations, section 383.51, which includes speeding 15 miles or more above the posted limit, reckless driving, improper or erratic traffic lane changes, or following the vehicle ahead too closely, in the last three years.
  • No driving under the influence violations in last five (5) years can be accepted. No DUI in a commercial vehicle will be accepted.
  • No major preventable vehicle collisions (using Vanguard's Vehicle Collision Preventability Guidelines) in the previous three (3) years.
  • No more than one (1) minor preventable vehicle collision (using Vanguard's Vehicle Collision Preventability Guidelines) in the previous three (3) years.

Drug & Alcohol

No previous drug or alcohol positive tests are acceptable.

Character

No record of drug or alcohol related convictions. Has no record of a felony within the last 10 years, no felony in a commercial motor vehicle ever, no theft related felony ever. Any indication of dishonesty, disorderly conduct, or serious misdemeanors will be evaluated before offering employment.

Physical Condition

Must be physically fit to pass a D.O.T. physical or have a Department of Transportation medical waiver for any medical disabilities. Must be physically capable to unload freight to the extent as outlined in the job description. Each driver must meet all of the qualifications specified in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Section 391. Prior to employment, all applicants must submit to a Department of Transportation Physical examination and drug test at a clinic or doctor approved by the Safety Department.

A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) can be accepted in place of a road test if the applicant meets or exceeds all of the above standards. If the standards are not met, then a Vanguard road test must be performed before the initial dispatch. If the Vanguard test cannot be performed, the applicant must provide a copy of the long form road test from a verifiable tester.
